What is Personal Style? Why is it important? And how can you find your own Personal Style? Let’s find out!
What is Personal Style?
Style is a very personal thing. We use fashion and clothing to express ourselves, our moods and our aspirations. It’s a wonderful thing when you can feel at home in your wardrobe and feel like yourself in anything you put on your body. However, a lot of us struggle with knowing what exactly our own style is. It’s easy to recognise what styles and outfits we like on other people, but not always as easy to translate this into our own wardrobes.
I have a few tips to help you through the process, and I have popped a video down below of me chatting a bit more about this, if you would rather listen than read.
Look at your current Wardrobe & Past outfits
Starting with wat you already own is a great idea, becasue this shows you a lot of what you have already chosen to buy, chosen to spend your money on, and hopefully chosen to wear. Pull out your top 10 pieces from your wardrobe that you think represent your style. If you’re not sure which pieces represent your style, pull out the 10 pieces you wear the most and enjoy wearing.
Consider body type
I’m not a huge fan of having rules around what you can and can’t wear, esepecially when these rules are dependant on your body type. However, if there are areas of your body that you like to highlight more than others, this will feed into your style choices. Choose silhouettes that feel good for you, whether thats an oversized top with skinny trousers, or a fitted top with a wider fitting bottom. If you like to highlight your waist, belted and wrap styles will be great for you.
Sometiems it’s easier to recognise a style we like on someone else rather than ourselves. Having people who’s style you love will help when figuring out what styles you would like to see yourself in. Choose people who’s style resonats with you the most, not just an aspirational style (basically, one you could see yourself wearing in everyday life). Pinterest is a great place to compile a Style Icon / Style Inspo board to keep all of your ideas in one place.
Are you a minimalist or maximalist when it comes to accessories? Sometimes accessories can be the very pieces that change your style complately. We all style jeans and a t-shirt in different ways depending on our shoes, handbag, jewellery and anything else we decide to put with our look (hats, belts, scarves, etc). Use accessories to bring in elements of your style into your more classic outfits.
Your beliefs and ideologies are a very important thing to consider within your wardrobe. This will determine where you buy your clothes, the brands you support and the styles available to you. If sustainable fashion is important to you, there can be a limited style available to you. However, if second hand or vintage is a passion for you then you may have a more eclectic style or a style inpsired by past eras rather than very contemporary. If supporting small designers and investing in one-off, unique pieces this will also influence your overall style aesthetic.
